Today, we’re highlighting Lauren, one of the founders of Baba’s Feed Project. Her heart-centered work is deeply rooted in love and service, and her commitment to the project reflects the teachings of Neem Karoli Baba. Lauren’s journey has been one of personal growth, connection, and deep devotion to the communities we serve. Let’s hear her story.
How did Baba’s Feed Project begin?
Baba’s Feed Project was founded in May 2020 after a trip to India. While there, we recognized the urgent need to serve those struggling to provide for their families. With Pintu on the ground in India, always leading with selfless service and a desire to make a difference, and the rest of us supporting his efforts from New Zealand and the U.S., we were fortunate to be in the right position to do something meaningful.
Our mission is to provide nourishing meals, clothing, and educational items to families in need, and by the grace of Neem Karoli Baba Maharaj-ji, the project has grown into a federally recognized charity with 501(c)(3) status. Every step of the journey has been a blessing, allowing us to serve and connect with communities that need it most.
What inspired you to start Baba’s Feed Project, and how has your journey been so far?
The teachings of Neem Karoli Baba, especially his message of unconditional love and selfless service (seva), inspired me to participate in the founding of Baba’s Feed Project. The need for this work was clear, and it aligned perfectly with the values I hold dear. The journey so far has been incredibly rewarding, not just in the lives we’re touching but also in my own personal growth. Each day, I see the impact of community and love in action, and it’s been an honor to be part of this service.
Can you share a memorable experience from your time with the project?
One of the most memorable experiences for me was when we were with Pintu in India in early 2022. During that trip we had the honor of distributing the food kit that contained our one millionth meal. Pintu put that kit into the hands of a beautiful little girl. Thinking about her eyes at that moment, has brought tears to mine in this moment. It’s those joyful moments that keep me here doing this seva. But it’s the excruciating experiences that keep me going too. Another memorable experience was when Pintu called about an little village of about 30 families who had all their living shelters destroyed the day prior. We put a call out to all those who support our mission and within days, Pintu had purchased new heavy tarps for the entire village so everyone could have a roof over their heads again. And ones even better than they had before!
Experiencing the joy and relief on a family’s face when they received their food kits, clothes, and full backpacks for their kids, and even shelter items like I describe above. It’s moments like these that show me the deep significance of the work we do. The gratitude expressed by the families we serve, and the wonderful people from all over who help support our work, is a constant reminder of why we are here—to serve with love and care, making even the smallest difference in someone’s life.
How do you incorporate the teachings of Baba Neem Karoli into your daily work?
Baba Neem Karoli’s teachings of “Love Everyone, Serve Everyone, Remember God, Tell The Truth”are my personal guiding principles and the foundation on which everything we do at Baba’s Feed Project is built. For me, service means seeing the divine in every person and giving without any expectation of return or result. Whether it’s coordinating with our volunteers, handling the logistics of our distributions, connecting with community members, and really through everything I do in life, I try to carry this mindset into action. It’s humbling and brings a sense of purpose to everything I do.
What’s a fun or unexpected hobby you have outside of your work with Baba’s Feed Project?
In my free time, I love to immerse myself in art, meditation, japa, and study. Art allows me to express myself creatively, and the rest bring me a connection with the holy that I hold so dear. But most of all, my free time is spent with my family. Loving them and existing in love with them is the most important part of my life. Extending that same depth of love to the rest of us is another hobby. And one I learned from Ram Dass when he talked about turning everyone into trees. Which means truly loving everyone exactly as they are.
What’s the most surprising thing you’ve learned about yourself through your work with BFP?
I’ve learned just how much strength I have to persevere through challenges. Helping to start Baba’s Feed Project has tested me in ways I didn’t expect, but it has also shown me how much love, patience, and resilience I can bring to the work. The needs are great, but when we approach everything with a clear sense of purpose, we find the strength to continue serving.
If you had to describe your experience with Baba’s Feed Project in a single sentence, what would it be?
Baba’s Feed Project has provided me with an opportunity to put loving everyone into action.
Lauren’s journey with Baba’s Feed Project is a testament to the power of love, compassion, and dedication. Her story reflects the heart and vision that fuel Baba’s Feed Project, inspiring all of us to continue this mission with the same spirit of selfless service and gratitude. We’re grateful for her leadership and for the beautiful impact she’s making every day.
